Last week, I spent a meditative hour at Float in Notting Hill. I want all of you to know that I solely tried floating for the sake of my readers. Not that I am looking for you to thank me, but I would never have done this otherwise because the simple idea of water in a big tank that looks like an egg was not enticing to me. However, I am so happy I did it.
When I arrived, I was offered some water and slippers and was brought to my flotation room. I was then briefed on exactly what I was to do...
My room was very clean with a with private shower, towels, products and large flotation tank. After I took a shower and giggled a little at what I was about to do, I hopped in to my personal tank (don't get alarmed if you see a film around the sides, it's the magnesium from all the salt in the water). Because the water has such a high volume of salt and your ears remain underwater (but your face is above so don't freak out), they recommend ear plugs (make sure to wear them). There is about 10" of water in the tank and it's is the perfect temperature, not too hot and not too cold. I got in to the tank, feeling a little funny at first and not knowing what to do. Of course I had to survey my surroundings, check out where the emergency button was in case for some reason I had a float emergency and then I got on my back, let myself go, turned off the light and closed the lid. There is plenty of room in there, but if you feel it's too closed in you can do this with the top open. However, if you can handle it I would recommend leaving it closed, it's more therapeutic.
When you first get in, it's odd to give up the control of your body that you're used to. Basically, just get in to position and, well, float. At first your neck aches a bit but if you clamp your hands and put them behind you they will support your head and eventually the neck ache subsides and you can remove your hands. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to float in the dead sea, this is what it's like. It's very cool! From under the water, all you can hear is the music, your breath and your heart beat. It really makes you pay attention to your breathing and relaxation and getting in to a state of relaxation. For 15 minutes they play the music that you can hear subtly under the water and then they turn the music off and you're in complete silence. Hopefully by the time the music is done playing you are drifting in to deep sleep.
After you're hour is up, they will play music to wake you up and you will have a shower and then you can make your way to the dressing room to get ready. They provide hair dryers and products.
This was a really interesting experience. How many of us can have a whole hour to just sleep and relax? My body felt amazing after and all muscle aches were relieved. You almost feel DRUGGED after you're done (and there's a reason for this, listen to podcast interview). I wouldn't suggest doing this in the middle of the day unless you plan on taking the rest of the day off to do nothing. You will be very sluggish and relaxed.
Floating actually started in the US, so if you're not in the UK, do a google search for a place near you!
You can hear more about floating in my podcast interview with owner Roz (try to listen in, she's very interesting), and notice my voice...that will show you how relaxed one can get.
Here are some of my tips and suggestions:
- DON'T forget to wear the earplugs they provide. I forgot them and 4 days later my ears are still clogged a little.
- Bring a bottle of water and keep it near you in the tank. They will give you a glass, but a bottle may be easier to keep near by in case you accidentally get the water in to your mouth like I did. It's pretty disgusting and could be distracting for the rest of your floating experience.
- I would also bring a small wash cloth to keep near by and wet it with fresh water. Use this in case you get water in your eyes (but you shouldn't unless you touch your eyes, because you will stay floating on your back).
- Don't forget deodorant and make-up for after your experience!
- Don't touch any of your clothes when you come out of the salty water.
- Keep an open mind, relax and enjoy. If you think you can't do an hour, they would be happy to have you build up to that over a period of a few visits, just let them know.
I highly recommend this experience!
